The scale tells you how many times smaller the model is than the real car. A bigger second number means a smaller model. These are rough lengths for a typical car:

• 1:64: about 7 cm, pocket size, for collections and small play.
• 1:43: about 10 cm, a common collector size.
• 1:32: about 14 cm, popular for toy diecast cars.
• 1:24: about 19 cm, big enough to show openable parts.
• 1:22: about 20 cm, close to 1:24 and common for RC diecast models.
• 1:18: about 25 cm, the large display size.

The real size varies with the car, so check the size in inches on the product page. Our 1:22 models are around 8 inches long.

Metal toy cars feel more solid than plastic ones, and that suits both uses. For play, a remote-controlled model gives the child something to drive, and the metal body feels more like a real car. For display, a diecast model looks best on a shelf or a desk, away from the edge where it can be knocked off. Many of our buyers do both, driving the car for a while and then displaying it.

• Body material: the product page should say diecast metal. A plastic body is not diecast.
• Scale and size: check both, because the scale alone does not tell you the length.
• Openable parts: doors, hood and trunk add detail, but they are fragile, so open them gently.
• Tyres and wheels: rubber tyres give better grip for driving.
• Lights and sound: check whether the model has working LED lights or sound effects.
• Power: check whether the battery is rechargeable and whether a USB cable is included.
• What is in the box: the remote, the battery, the cable and any water bottle for smoke.
